Newburgh Free Academy Concept Vehicle Racing Team

Here at NFA, our students are making global changes to create a better future for all!

Do you think you will ever get a chance to own a vehicle that can achieve over 100 miles per gallon in your lifetime? Have you ever wondered how automotive designers develop and test futuristic concepts that improve a vehicles overall fuel efficiency? The students at Newburgh Free Academy who are a part of the Concept Vehicle Racing Team (CVRT) did just that. In the 2016-2017 school year, members of our CVRT built a prototype diesel car that was able to achieve 344 mpg! Our other vehicle, which is a battery electric urban concept, recorded an impressive 34.83 miles per kilowatt hour, which is 10 times more efficient than the average electric car! From these impressive results, the CVRT has had the honor of representing the United States for the past 2 years at the Shell Eco Marathon Drivers World Championship. This event took place in London, England and this past year the CVRT placed 7th of over 400 global teams!

It is inspiring to see all the hard work and dedication that has gone into these vehicles pay off in such great ways.  We are planning to continue improving our vehicles and accomplishments in the 2017 – 2018 school year!

Newburgh Free Academy's
Career and Technical Education

Newburgh Free Academy is a public high school in Orange County, New York. The NFA CVRT is comprised of 9th-12th grade students who strive to gain engineering related experience for their future endeavors beyond high school. Students work together to design, build, test drive, and race fuel efficient vehicles from scratch. These students work directly with teachers in the Career and Technical Education department, such as Engineering, Automotive Technology, Welding, Auto Body, and Video Production to name a few, which are all elective opportunities for every student who attends Newburgh Free Academy.

Our Student's Skills

Learning Through Real World Applications

Design

Mechanical and Automotive Engineering

Students get their feet wet through the development of sketching skills. All new features were first sketched by students before they were built and tested.

Welding

Welding

Material Processing and Fabrication

Students learn the art of MIG and TIG welding. Along with fabrication, students also learn post processing skills while maintaining a safe and clean work environment

Automotive Engineering

Hands on problem solving and troubleshooting

Students learn the art of "the hack" by custom building our vehicles. Not everything goes as planned, so students must use the resources available to them and find a solution to the problem.

Mechanic
Science

Chemistry & Composites

Using Space Age Technology

Students build body panels using carbon fiber, kevlar and other materials in a composite mixture. The chemical reaction is measured and controlled using a variety of measurement skills and techniques

Public Relations

Recording progress and communicating with the community

Students record the progress of our vehicles through various photographs and videos. Students run the social media platforms to ensure that the community is a part of the process, seeing what takes place behind the scenes.
